Deep Listening - Composition through Sound
Today's lecture
During the week 1 lecture we got given some gym mats and was told to lay on them and relax or close our eyes and enjoy the sounds played through the speaker by our tutor. The sounds/song played through the speaker is titled "Deep Listening (2016)".

After the experience, we were asked a few questions to which we all got a chance to answer and explain. Here are the questions and my answers to them:

Q: How was the experience?
A: Very realxing, felt quite at peace yet felt a bit as if i was in danger, a sort of feeling between peace and uneasyness.

Q:What was the colors and/or textures you felt/seen?
A: Felt a very light brown sort of like sand but not a beach sand more like a desert type of sand and so was the texture felt very sand-like

this is a visual representation of what I have seen. This was done by inserting my answer into ChatGPT and asking it to create it into an illustration

Q:What could see during the experience?
A: I could imagine a big castle in the middle of a desert, the aftermath of a war, a sand storm very close to it, the castle was in flames for the most of it with a red ripped flag blowing in the sandstorm wind.

Q: Any thoughts that came up during the experience?
A: At first I was quite confused but towards the end I had a clear mind.

After the experience and the round of questions, although I felt quite confused and amused at the introduction of the lesson and module, I also felt curious to what the rest of the module for the trimester could be like.

We then took a break and after coming back from the break we were given the task to go out and about and record sounds using our phone's recording app.

After recording quite a few sounds, I was satisfied with the variety of sounds which I have compiled into 1 track. The track can be listened to below.

Our week 1 task was to research a "related subject of your choice to help develop your thinking on sound, composition, and/or photography"

For this I have looked at a Film I always was fascinated with;
A Quiet Place

Unfortuantely I couldn't find a specific soundscape, only the soundtrack but after looking through multiple videos on YouTube I have came across a video titled:
"Everytime someone makes a sound in the Quiet Place Saga "

The use of soundscape in this film is so amazing, as the whole film is based on foley and the fact that any noise you make can eventually get you killed. I found it very interesting, although the use of violins and overall orchestra felt a bit overused, still amazing performance.

This then inspired me to create a sort of musical foley using the recordings I have made. Below I have attached a short sample of it:

A very intriguing and exciting introduction to our Photography Module. Extremely unexpected mostly as photography is visual, and using sound as an introduction to such module made me curious for more as mentioned before. Looking forward to the next week.
