Fitzwilliam Project
What art is showcased at the Fitzwilliam museum
Fitzwilliam museum features a variety of ancient art and artefacts such as Egyptian sarcophagus and ancient armour. It also showcases a lot of ancient greek statues, artefacts and coins.
What is projection mapping?
In simple terms, projection mapping is made by using a projector and real life items to create an alternative art to what the item is. Such as using a human face projection onto a white plastic mask making it look very weird yet artistic. This can be done by first creating the image/video that is projected and then having to perfectly aim it at the object to suit it in a way that it looks seemless.
The artwork I have picked for my project
For my project I have decided to use the bust of Antinous as Dionysos. This is a perfect pick as it has more depth and texture than something such as a painting or an ancient vase. Thankfully the bust can be found on the Fitzwilliam museum website as a 3D render which I have picked to use to help me with my projection and where to put everything before having the chance to even do it in person.

My project
For my project I wanted to create something that looked exactly like projection mapping but in 3D as unfortunately we were unable to use the projections in person at the museum. My idea was to use Blender to create a 3D animation of what it would look like if I was able to create it in real life. This was also a challenge set for myself as I have never used Blender before and wanted to teach myself how to and create something different from everyone else.
I have fortunately managed to find the bust of Antinous as Dionysos on the Fitzwillam Museum website as a downloable 3D asset which was the perfect scenario for me

After downloading the asset, I had to learn how to exactly create the projection mapping using light which always seemed hard for me mostly using a 3D environment. For this I had to search up youtube tutorials to help teach me and I actually found the perfect one for me as it taught me not only how to add the object on the scene but also change the light modes and how to fully create a projection mapping.
Whilst watching this tutorial I learnt exactly what I wanted to do and went ahead and started creating. As the tutorial says you first have to design the mappings in Photoshop, below are all the designs I created for the projection.

After creating the mappings I had to go in blender and add them to create the perfect projection. Using an additional green light to add slight light I came to this outcome.

Above I have uploaded a render of the first projection mapping I have created. After this I have added more and proceeded to render each and one of them then add them into Premiere Pro where i imported all the rendered frames. Then I decided I needed a song to animate to, in which I decided it should be Drugs you should try it by Travis Scott. I picked the song due to its instrumental where the guitar plays at an interval which I thought would look interesting to see animated. The song also has a very spacious and mysterious vibe to it which also adds to the way the projection mapping looks like.
