Algorithms of oppression

Lecture diary:

This lecture's primary focus was on the technological advancements made during the 1912–1954 lifetime of Alan Turing, one of the greatest mathematics of all time. We studied the development of several technologies, such as television and sonar technology. We then discussed the oppression of algorithms, including how frequently search engines make assumptions. This reminded me of talk Joy Buolamwini gave about the prejudice of algorithms.

"Sometimes respecting people means making sure your systems are inclusive such as in the case of using AI for precision medicine, at times it means respecting people's privacy by not collecting any data, and it always means respecting the dignity of an individual."

Joy Adowaa Buolamwini is a Ghanaian-American computer scientist and digital activist based at the MIT Media Lab

In 2016 Joy created the Algorithmic Justic League (AJL)

The Algorithmic Justice League (AJL) is a digital advocacy non-profit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The AJL combines art and research to illuminate the social implications and harms of AI in society.
