History of Video Games

Today’s lecture started off with a talk about our personal video game memories. You know, that warm, nostalgic and fuzzy feeling when we think about the old-school consoles we grew up with. For me, it’s all about my PlayStation 2 Slim. There's numerous games I used to play on it, from Shrek Adventures to God of War and Primal.

Tennis for Two

Also known as Computer Tennis, is a sports video game that simulates a game of tennis. It holds a special place in the history of video games as one of the earliest creations.

  • In 1958, American physicist William Higinbotham worked at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York.

  • For the lab’s annual visitors’ day, he decided to create an interactive display to entertain the public.

  • Using the lab’s Donner Model 30 analog computer, which could simulate trajectories with wind resistance, Higinbotham designed Tennis for Two.

  • He and technician Robert V. Dvorak built the game over three weeks.

  • The game was displayed on an oscilloscope and played with two custom aluminum controllers.
